My Story
Dr. Michael P. Smith is a board-certified anesthesiologist and the Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Anamed, Inc. With more than three decades of clinical experience, he brings deep expertise in airway management, perioperative care, and anesthesia practice leadership to the company’s mission of making everyday procedures easier.
Dr. Smith earned his medical degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University (formerly Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine) and completed his anesthesiology residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He practiced for many years at the Cleveland Clinic before continuing as an anesthesiologist with Professional Anesthesia Service, Inc., affiliated with Summa Health in Akron, Ohio.
A longtime leader in the specialty, Dr. Smith has served as Past President of the Association of Anesthesia Clinical Directors (AACD) and Past President of the Anesthesia Foundation. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology and currently serves as President of the Academy of Anesthesiology. His involvement with the American Society of Anesthesiologists has included service on the Electronic Committee of the Wood Library-Museum.
Dr. Smith is the inventor of the first mechanical intubation stylet—an apparatus designed to facilitate controlled advancement of an endotracheal tube relative to a stylet through a user-actuated motive mechanism—protecting airway access with greater precision and single-operator control. This foundational work in mechanical airway device design directly informs Anamed’s development of the SureGlide Advancing Stylet and related innovations aimed at improving efficiency and success in VL intubation.
As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Smith guides the clinical direction, value assessment, and real-world applicability of Anamed’s technologies, ensuring that devices developed for anesthesia, emergency, defense, and austere environments meet the practical needs of practicing clinicians.
